David Ormerod took his 1,000th Lancashire League wicket to help Accrington back to the top of the table after a mixture of champagne moments at Centre Vale. Todmorden won the toss and put Accrington in to bat on a slow wicket. Accrington's early order took on the mantle of Champagne Charlie's as each batsman in turn were dismissed in bizarre fashion. Opener Paul Carroll started the trend by chipping John Campbell to Mo Bux at third man in the third over with the score on 8. Stuart Crabtree came in and played the shot of the match when he lofted Bux onto the school roof for a superb straight six but he then dollied a return catch to Campbell soon after. Professional Roy Silva got off the mark with a boundary but he then lofted a steepling catch to Mark Clayton at cover. Graham Lloyd quickly went to 14 but the former Lancashire man somehow contrived to send the ball rocketing vertically instead of horizontally when attempting a cover drive to be snapped up by the gloves of Danny Brown. After 12 overs Accrington stood on 54-4, having hit seven boundaries and two sixes, the first of which came off the bat of Matt Wilson in the second over of the match. Wilson top scored with 23 before sending the ball into orbit and back into the hands of Todmorden's skipper for the day Andrew Sutcliffe. Toby Bulcock gave David Whitehead a regulation slip catch off Bux for 5 and then James Morgan nipped out Zahir Afzal (16), Simon Hanson (11) and Andy Greenwood (0). At 112-9 Accrington were in trouble but a last wicket stand of 30, the best of the innings, between skipper David Ormerod (16 not out) and Damian Clarke (15) ultimately proved to be the match winner as the visitors raised their score to 142. Morgan finished with 4-30 and Bux 3-30. Todmorden openers Stuart Priestley (10) and Ben Sutcliffe (6) became Ormerod's 998th and 999th victims and then Silva picked up the vital wicket of home professional Gulam Bodi for just 3. Silva also removed Andrew Sutcliffe to have Todmorden in trouble at 26-4. Brown (16) and Clayton took the score to 65 when Bulcock trapped the wicketkeeper on front. At last came the true champagne moment when Clayton chipped Accrington skipper Ormerod to Bulcock at cover for his 1,000th wicket. Bulcock removed Whitehead and debutant James Peavoy and Ormerod sent back Bux to have Todmorden 77-9. The last pair of Campbell and Morgan defied the Accrington attack to make the best stand of the match, adding 37 to deny the visitors the bonus points, both batsmen finishing unbeaten on 18. Ormerod took 4-51 and Bulcock 3-29 for the new league leaders.
