There were runs galore at Thorneyholme Road where East Lancs beat Accrington by 30 runs after stacking up 254-7. Martin Whittle picked up 4-42 in an excellent spell to have East Lancs reeling at 112-6, but Phil Mercer took control with a brilliant unbeaten 80, adding 58 for the 7th wicket with Phil Mooney (31) and an unbroken 74 for the 8th wicket with Paul Kelly (26 not out) to take the visitors to 254-7. All Accrington's batsmen got in with skipper Mark Aspin hitting 50, Paul Barratt 44, Nick Marsh 23, Brian Holmes 21, Mark Greenhalgh 19 and Russell Edmonds 18, but the dismissal of West Indian professional Sherwin Campbell for 24 by his opposite number Alan Dawson (3-73) proved vital.
