Accrington went down to a sixth successive defeat after winning their opening three matches, losing by 77 runs at Nelson. Mark Greenhalgh took 4-39, including a hat-trick, with Paul Garaghty top scoring with 55 in Nelson's 189-8. Accrington professional Neil Johnson struck the first blow by having opener Chris Hartley taken by Neil Barnes without scoring at 4. Professional Joe Scuderi and Phillip Pickles put on 82 before the Australian was caught behind by Billy Rawstron off Steve Juliff for 40. Damian Clarke joined the attack and had Pickles caught behind by Rawstron for 37 two runs later. Clarke struck again six runs later, having Chris Heap caught by Demaine without scoring. Garaghty and Marcus Phelan put on 73 for the 5th wicket before Phelan was cleaned up by Greenhalgh for 27. Peter Cockell and Garaghty added another 22 to take the score to 189 with three balls remaining. Greenhalgh then took centre stage cleaning up Garaghty for 55, including three fours and a six. The medium pacer then had Trevor Kegg (0) caught by Johnson and finally after the batsmen had changed ends, he cleaned up Cockell (12) off the final ball of the innings. After losing Bob Collins (10) to Kegg at 14, skipper Nick Marsh and Johnson took the score to 54. Cockell joined the attack and picked up both Marsh (19) and Rawstron (2) at 54 and 59. Martin Whittle (8) was trapped in front by Michael Warburton (2-21) at 76 and three runs later Cockell struck a vital blow by cleaning up Johnson for 31. Warburton then trapped Morgan Whipp in front with scoring and Cockell cleaned up Neil Barnes (6). Scuderi returned to wrap up the innings by sending back Greenhalgh (5) and Clarke (0). Mark Demaine hit an unbeaten 21 from 18 balls with Juliff unable to bat after picking up an injury in the field. Scorecard
