Accrington returned to winning ways after three successive league and cup defeats with a 3 wicket win over Ramsbottom at Thorneyholme Road. Ramsbottom openers Paul Compston and Ian Bell were parted with the score on 43 when Accrington skipper David Lloyd bowled Bell for 25. Professional Brian McMillan joined Compston to add 100 for the 2nd wicket when Lloyd struck again, having the amateur stumped by Billy Rawstron for 55, his maiden league half century which included five fours. Skipper Jack Simpson was bowled by Ian Birtwistle for 7 with the score on 162. McMillan finished unbeaten on 90 with eight fours and a six, passing 1,000 runs for the season during his innings. Steve Ashworth also finished on 8 not out when Ramsbottom's innings closed on 196-3. Steve Monkhouse struck immediately for the visitors having Andy Barker caught behind without scoring to secure his 200th Lancashire League wicket. Nick Marsh and Rawstron took the score to 65 when Marsh was caught and bowled by Jon Fielding for 28. McMillan had Rawstron caught behind by Simpson for 36 with 77 on the board and the South African picked up a return catch to dismiss Paul Barratt (5) at 91. Professional Robert Haynes added 65 with Trevor Hatch for the 5th wicket. Haynes had made 58, including five fours and three sixes when he was caught by Ashworth off Fielding. Hatch also fell to the Simpson-Monkhouse combination at 177 when he had made 24 but Mark Demaine hit a senior best unbeaten 27 to lead Accrington to victory, losing Martin Whittle (4) to Monkhouse (3-37) at 187. Lloyd was also unbeaten on 9 when the game was won in the 43rd over. Accrington moved back up to second place but the gap behind Haslingden was now 20 points. Scorecard
