Ian Birtwistle led league leaders Accrington off the field after taking 5-10 in the home sides 79 run win over Burnley. The veteran had been persuaded to play by his mother following the sudden death of the father the previous day. After Paul Spencer had removed Andy Barker for a single at 10, Neil Barnes joined Nick Marsh to add 44 for the 2nd wicket before being run out for 13. Professional Robert Haynes fell four runs later without troubling the scorers, caught by Bob Whittaker off his opposite number Mudassar Nazar. Marsh was caught by Terry Little off Nick Kelly for 40 with the score on 82. Billy Rawstron and skipper David Lloyd then put on 58 for the 5th wicket but Kelly struck again to remove Rawstron for a 57 ball innings of 41. Lloyd fell to Spencer (3-60) four runs later for 24 but David Parsons added an unbeaten 17 to help Accrington close on 165-7. Neil Holmes took the vital wicket of Mudassar who was well caught low down by the diving Parsons at mid on for 11 with the score on 14 and Haynes trapped fellow opener skipper Peter Brown for 1 without addition. Birtwistle replaced Holmes in the attack and after bowling a maiden had the dangerous Little held by Barker at gully for 24 with the total on 46. Trevor Pickup (8) was snapped up by Birtwistle who took fine low catch off his own bowling at 60 and four runs later Roger Law was caught at square leg by Barnes for 16 again off Birtwistle. Spencer (0) and Kelly (5) both fell to Haynes as Burnley were reduced to 79-7. Birtwistle then removed youngster Andy McLeod (3) on his debut and Mark Harvey (3) to finish with 5-10 from 7 overs, 4 of which were maidens. Haynes (4-41) polished the visitors off by having Terry Townend (0) taken by Rawstron to dismiss Burnley for 86 to give Accrington their second maximum points win in as many days. Scorecard
