Accrington's third consecutive win of the season at Rishton was marred by a serious injury to skipper David Lloyd who suffered an Achilles tendon injury which would keep him out until the end of August. Lloyd suffered the injury whilst batting, retiring hurt on 16. Opener Graham Beech top scored with 26 in Accrington's 120-8 from 46 overs. Nick Marsh was first to go caught by skipper David Wells off Robbie Walsh for 5 with the total on 13. Professional Rod Tucker made just 8 before falling to Colin Kuhn with the score 27. Andy Barker had also made 8 when he was caught by Graham Thomson off Tony Yates at 49. Beech's 80 ball innings ended at 52 when he was caught by John Ainscough also off Yates. Billy Rawstron fell 4 runs later without scoring to give Yates his third wicket. Paul Barratt fell to home professional Mohammad Azharuddin for 6 and then came Lloyd's injury at 81-6. Trevor Hatch (10), Neil Barnes (14 not out), Martin Whittle (8) and Ian Birtwistle (4 not out) battled away to take Accrington up to 120. Yates finished with 5-30 for Rishton. Whittle removed opener David Wilson for 4 and Hatch sent back Azharuddin for 10 team but Craig Smith and Phil Sykes took the score to 68 when Smith was caught behind by Rawstron off Tucker for 34. Sykes also fell to Tucker for 34 at 83. The Australian then removed Keith Topham (2), Wells (1), Ainscough (10) and Kuhn (9) to finish with 6-28 but it was Birtwistle (2-58) who finished off the home side by removing Thomson and Walsh both without scoring to leave Yates stranded on 7 in Accrington's 5 run win. Accrington's victory left the club in joint second place in the first published league table of the season, 1 point behind defending champions Haslingden. Scorecard
