Fine bowling by professional Rod Tucker (5-44) and Ian Birtwistle (4-36) helped Accrington to a 14 run win over Lowerhouse at Thorneyholme Road. The home side made the worst possible start losing opener Nick Marsh to Robert Ormerod's first ball of the match. Andy Gardener (8) followed at 17 to give Ormerod (2-14) his second wicket but Neil Barnes helped Tucker take the score to 50 before falling to Lowerhouse professional Manzoor Elahi for 21. Tucker was bowled by Alan Holden for 40 at 82 and Andy Barker was bowled by David Whalley for 20 with 100 on the board. Ten runs later Billy Rawstron was caught by Pankaj Tripathi off Holden (3-61) for 14. Mark Demaine (6) fell at 123 and Paul Barratt was caught by Chris Bleazard off Holden for 21. Birtwistle (9 not out) and Neil Holmes (2 not out) saw Accrington through to the end of their rain reduced 43 over innings which ended on 146-8. Lowerhouse openers Stan Heaton and Bleazard put on 37 before Bleazard fell to Tucker for 16. Tripathi (1) fell 3 runs later and at 49 Holmes took the vital wicket of Elahi who was caught by Birtwistle for 4. Heaton's innings of 40 ended at 81 when Birtwistle picked up his first victim. Phil Astin was bowled by Tucker for 24 and Brian Higgin fell in identical fashion for 23, 11 runs later at 117. Birtwistle struck again at 127 having Holden caught by Barratt. One run later Brian Holmes was cleaned up by Tucker but it was Birtwistle who polished off the tail by having Whalley stumped by Barratt for 1 and Ormerod caught by Barnes for 2. Accrington's victory was only the club's second at home during the season and helped the club stay in seventh place in the table. Scorecard
