Accrington suffered their third league defeat in a row since losing skipper David Lloyd to a long term injury, going down to a 49 run defeat by Enfield at Thorneyholme Road. Enfield openers David Stanley and Mas Ahmed had put on 42 when Ahmed was brilliantly caught low down by Accrington professional Rod Tucker off John Wilkin for 26. Stanley put on 38 with his professional Bernard Reidy before being caught on the run by Martin Whittle off Ian Birtwistle for 28. Eight runs later Paul Allen was bowled by Birtwistle for 5. Reidy was next to go trapped in front by his opposite number Tucker for 42 with the total on 106. Andy McMinn fell to Tucker at 111 and Eric Blanche was also trapped by the Australian at 122. Keith Windle hit 26 off 36 balls before being the 9th and last wicket to fall, bowled by Whittle. Kevin Lace fell to Birtwistle (3-58) and John Bramwell was run out for 16 in Enfield's 169-9. Tucker finished with 3-56. Reidy immediately put the brakes on Accrington's reply, dismissing stand-in skipper Graham Beech for 1 and conceding just 2 runs from his first 5 overs. After 10 overs the home side had crawled to 15 with left handers Nick Marsh and Andy Barker tied down by the medium pace of Reidy and Stanley. Barker eventually fell to a superb low catch by Lace off Stanley after taking 32 balls to score 14. Tucker was next to go at 60, caught at slip by Ahmed off Reidy for 10 with Marsh following at 81 after hitting 39 from 86 balls before offering a return catch to the Enfield professional. Neil Barnes was run out for 12 to leave Accrington on 96-5 in the 34th over. Trevor Hatch fought hard in making 17 but Reidy (5-38 from 19.4 overs) and Bramwell (3-21) polished off the tail to dismiss Accrington for 120 in the 43rd over. Accrington dropped down to fifth place in the table. Scorecard
