Accrington’s poor run continued with a fourth successive defeat at Haslingden. The home side got off to a good start with openers Geoff Heaton and Bryan Knowles making 22 apiece in a 46 run stand before Heaton fell to Accrington professional David Lloyd. Four runs later Knowles became the first of four victims for Ian Birtwistle (4-47). Ian Austin was next to go caught by Lloyd off Birtwistle for 8 and John Entwistle made 9 before offering Birtwistle a return catch. Mike Ingham had made 23 when he too offered a return catch this time to Lloyd and when professional Hartley Alleyne was caught by Glen Dickinson for 6, the home side were struggling on 107-6. It was then that Bob Grimshaw chose the moment to score his maiden senior half century in his 64th innings, adding 34 with David Jackson (9) and 33 with Andy Sidley (9 not out) as Haslingden closed on 174-7. Accrington batted steadily against the pace of Alleyne (6-50) and the seam of Austin (4-28), Alan Barnes and Rod Taylor. Openers Billy Rawstron (17) and Andy Stevenson (25) put on 40 before falling to Alleyne with Lloyd (22) and Mark Aspin (22) putting on 42 for the 3rd wicket. Austin bagged both batsmen with Alleyne accounting for Neil Jones (4), Andy Gardener (1), second team skipper Geoff Hayhurst (14) in a rare outing and last man Birtwistle (0).  A 9th wicket stand of 25 between Glen Dickinson (8 not out) and skipper Alan Worsick (23) helped Accrington make 148 all out.
