Bottom club Accrington gained revenge for a defeat on the second weekend beating league leaders Burnley by 14 runs to secure a first home win of the season. Professional David Stead hit an unbeaten 73 in his ides 103-7 made from a rain reduced 31, 8 ball overs. After Paul Blakey removed Geoff Hayhurst (1), Burnley professional Gary Robertson (5-68) picked up the wickets of Graham Beech (5), Neil Jones (0), Ray Haworth (0), Mark Aspin (2) and skipper Alan Richardson (1). The only other batsman in double figures, Peter West (12), was dismissed by the spin of John Edmondson. Trevor Hatch was unbeaten on 6 at the close. Burnley made a good start in reply with openers Roland Harrison 928) and Barry Bromley (21) both in the runs. Both men fell to Ian Birtwistle who went on to take a match winning 7-14 from 7.6 overs. Birtwistle also removed Robertson (5), Peter Brown (0), Trevor Pickup (11), Blakey (0) and Edmondson (1) with Stead accounting for Mick Swift (12), wicketkeeper Gordon Allison (6) and Tim Gaynor (0) as Burnley were bowled out for 89.
