East Lancs went top after beating champions Accrington on Saturday May 15th at Alexandra Meadows by 8 wickets on a day that saw two matches abandoned and others affected by the rain. On a cloud filled day at The Meadows, the champions were soon in trouble at 52-6 with professional Trevor Chappell taking 4-45 after George Baron had removed openers Geoff Hayhurst (9) and Graham Beech (20). Accrington professional Alan Worsick hit his side out of trouble with six huge sixes in an innings of 63. Skipper Ian Birtwistle (25) added 72 for the 7th wicket with his professional to take Accrington to 130-9. Worsick removed Brian Ratcliffe (11) and Tony Gallagher accounted for Wayne Cooper (35) but Chappell hit an unbeaten 63 with Jim Kenyon still there on 19 in an unbroken stand of 50 that took East Lancs 3 points clear after 4 games. Accrington lost for the second time and lie in 8th place.
