Rawtenstall v Accrington

Professional Alan Worsick led a splendid later order rally to give Accrington a 1 wicket win at Rawtenstall and a third successive victory. Requiring 171 to win, Accrington were 70-5 with only 14 overs to go when Worsick used his broad shoulders to good effect, hitting six explosive sixes, a five and three fours in an innings of 65 as the lower order responded to the challenge. Wicketkeeper Terry Neville hit the winning six in the last over to finish unbeaten on 13 with Alan Richardson (19), Alan Kennedy (19), Ian Birtwistle (19) and Malcolm Taylor (17) all chipping in. Home professional Dave Brickett took 4-70 after hitting an equally explosive unbeaten 68 after managing just 1 run on his two previous visits to the crease. Both sides' innings followed a similar pattern scoring wise with the first half of the innings yielding just 50 runs, but Accrington lost more wickets. Alan Holt (36), Brian Chapman (30) and Brian Payne (15) all contributed to Rawtenstall's 170-6 with Worsick (2-35) and Tony Gallagher (2-38) taking 2 wickets each for Accrington. After three matches Accrington stand in joint second place with Burnley on 14 points, 1 point behind champions Ramsbottom.
