Accrington 1970
Accrington 1st XI 1970

Accrington dropped down a place to third after drawing at Ramsbottom. The home side used up 54 overs in making 151-9 before declaring to leave Accrington 90 minutes to chase the runs. Opener Arthur Chapman hit a career best 57, adding 54 with Trevor Morris who was caught at slip by Russ Cuddihy off Ian Birtwistle for 25. Chapman was next to go at 97 caught behind by Terry Neville off Alan Worsick. Three runs later Worsick trapped Ray Brooks (2) in front and followed up by cleaning up Henry Hall (3) and John Ashworth (0) at 106. Skipper Eddie Robinson held a return catch off Peter Ashworth (6) at 117 and ten runs later he bowled Maurice Haslam without scoring. Professional Bapu Nadkarni took 102 minutes in making 27 before being eighth man out to Worsick at 131. Skipper Terry Stewart became Worsick's sixth victim at 132 but last pair Duncan Brooks (8 not out) and Bill Savage (10 not out) put on 19 before the home side finally declared. Worsick finished with 6-37 from 16 overs. Accrington soon lost Geoff Hayhurst (1) and Cuddihy (4) but Brian Rutter joined professional Bruce Francis to add a brisk 52 for the 3rd wicket. The stand was broken when Rutter was run out after a mix up with his professional for 23. Alan Richardson made 16 in helping Francis take the score to 99 before he was also run out. Robinson (2) then fell to Nadkarni at 104. Francis passed his half century in 68 minutes and when he fell to Savage at 114 he had made 60 from 74 balls. Lindon Dewhurst (11), Bob Ratcliffe (9) and Neville (0) all fell to Nadkarni (4-58) chasing the runs and at this point Accrington had to shut up shop with last pair Birtwistle and Worsick playing out time to earn a draw.
