Accrington 1st XI 1970

Accrington began the new decade in style with a 10 wicket win at Colne. Heavy rain in mid week threatened to delay the start of the season but all of the opening day fixtures survived, although heavy showers interrupted both innings at The Horsfield. Alan Worsick celebrated his return to the club after a season at Burnley by taking 6-12 in 12 overs, 7 of which were maidens. Opener Derek Harker was Worsick's first victim, caught by Malcolm Taylor without scoring with 10 on the board. New professional Bruce Francis opened the bowling, sending down three overs before giving way to Ian Birtwistle who picked up the second wicket when new Colne professional Lloyd Cornelius was bowled for just 4. Opener Trevor Lonsdale was next to go without addition to the score of 14 when he was clean bowled by Worsick. Promising young batsman Andrew Kennedy fell to a catch by Bob Ratcliffe off Birtwistle for 4 at 19. Malcolm Pollard (5) and Peter Lane (0) both fell to Worsick at 23. Four runs later Brian Bulcock was bowled by Worsick for 2. Alan Braithwaite made 6 before falling to the Ratcliffe - Birtwistle combination at 37. Worsick shattered wicketkeeper Alan Harker's middle stump for 7 at 38 leaving veteran Bobby Little to play the best shots of the innings in making 12 before being caught by Brian Rutter off Birtwistle who finished with 4-28. It took openers Francis and Geoff Hayhurst 13 overs to pass Colne's 50 all out with the Australian hitting is opposite number Cornelius out of the ground twice in his unbeaten 28. Hayhurst was unbeaten on 21. Scorecard
