Accrington 1st XI 1970

Career best performances from skipper Eddie Robinson and opening batsman Geoff Hayhurst just failed to help Accrington beat Church in a local derby at Thorneyholme Road. Robinson took 7-38 to help dismiss Church for 103 and Hayhurst hit an unbeaten 55 but Accrington finished 7 runs short of victory when rain ended the contest after 22.1 overs of the home sides reply. Alan Worsick removed opener Bill Heys before a run had been scored after Robinson won the toss and put Church in to bat. The skipper then helped himself to the wickets of Jimmy Haworth (11), Steve Metcalf (1), professional Jim Mitchell (37), Barry Wilson (21), Geoff Briggs (3), Tommy George (0) and last man Jack Houldsworth (1). Professional Bruce Francis made 28 out of a 1st wicket stand of 55 with Hayhurst before being bowled by Houldsworth who also dismissed Cuddihy for 3 at 73. Skipper Bob Fishwick (2-8) picked up the wickets of Lindon Dewhurst (0) and Alan Richardson (7) as Accrington finished 7 runs short of victory after the umpires had taken the players off in light drizzle.
