Accrington 1st XI 1970

Accrington suffered their first defeat of the season losing at Turf Moor by 22 runs after dismissing Burnley for 91. The home side were on the ropes at 10-4 and 25-5 but fighting innings by Barry Bromley (33), professional Harold Rhodes (13) and Joe Fletcher (21) helped to post a match winning total. Rhodes then took a hat-trick in picking up a season's best bowling figures of 8-20 to dismiss Accrington for 69. Alan Worsick again got Accrington off to a great start by having Burnley skipper Roland Harrison caught behind by Terry Neville before a run had been scored. Worsick then clean bowled Bernard Lavin at the same score and he also had Neil Whalley caught by Bob Ratcliffe for 6. When skipper Eddie Robinson removed opener Howard Thomas (4) Burnley were 10-4. Peter Brown scored 8 in taking the total to 25 with Bromley before being trapped in front by Worsick. Rhodes joined Bromley to take the score to 56 before being well caught by Russ Cuddihy at mid on off Ian Birtwistle for 13. Birtwistle had Barry Foster caught by professional Bruce Francis for 2 at 63. Five runs later Robinson had Bromley caught by Brian Rutter for a fine 33. Fletcher hit 21 vital runs at number ten before being bowled by Robinson at 89. the Accrington skipper then picked up last man John Richardson for 2 at 91 leaving Cliff Maden unbeaten on 4. Worsick finished with 4-28, Robinson took 4-39 and Birtwistle 2-23. Openers Francis and Geoff Hayhurst got Accrington off to fine start adding 33 before Francis fell to Fletcher for 28, his third innings of that score in as many innings. Rhodes then got to work on the amateurs, sending back Hayhurst (5), Cuddihy (3) and Rutter (7) to expose Accrington's young middle order of Bob Ratcliffe (6), Alan Kennedy and Malcolm Taylor who were all victims of Rhodes first league hat-trick. Neville also fell to Rhodes without scoring and when Robinson also fell without scoring Accrington were 56-9. Birtwistle hit 12 before falling to Rhodes and Accrington were dismissed for 69 in the 25th over. Scorecard
