Honours finished even against one of Accrington’s main title contenders, Nelson who had the formidable Johnny Wardle as professional.

All of Accrington’s batsmen made runs apart from professional Wes Hall who was trapped in front by his oppostite number without scoring. Derek Rushton made an unbeaten 52 adding 52 with Martin Welbourne who was also unbeaten on 35 when Lindon Dewhurst declared on 165-5. The skipper made 27, Jackie Hope 17, Frank Rushton 16 and Derek Mark 11 with Wardle taking 4-75 for Nelson.

Hall took 3-48 but Nelson’s batsmen had the upper hand with opener Neville Wood hitting 55, former Accrington Stanley player Dennis Smith 27 and Wardle 20 as the match petered out into a draw.
