Accrington Members Vote to sell off land

Tuesday October 23rd 2007

EGM

Accrington Cricket Club has been given the go ahead by its members to pursue negotiations for the sale of a portion of the club's land. At Monday's EGM members heard that a proposed scheme to sell off an area of land for building development could safeguard the club's future for ten years and beyond.

The club's Development Committee was empowered to begin proceedings which will include altering the deed of covenant which was tied to the original sale of the land over a hundred years ago.

At an EGM in June members were told that the club would struggle to see out the season due to a looming financial crisis.

Generous donations by members, ex players and friends of the club allowed Accrington to overcome the crisis that threatened its immediate future. A Development Committee was formed to look at putting a business plan in place. This and a terrific effort by the Tea Ladies and the Ladies Committee ensured that Accrington Cricket Club's short term future was secured.

The actual wording of the proposal by former Accrington Chairman Brian Prickett was: 'The Development Committee be allowed to pursue their negotiations for the sale of a portion of the Club's land consisting of the car park and tennis courts area in order to protect the club's interests.'
